Class: NIGHTBLADE
Run the pet and EG for LoS, streak a million times, use a massive proc set. The pvp community has deteriorated so much due to the insane performance degradation and “huge zerg of 40k tank and heals meta” there’s no need to be respectful or not run broken setups. Welcome to the Magicka Warden Build PvE “Ice & Fire” for Elder Scrolls Online. Make sure to bookmark the link as I will keep updating the build for each new Update of ESO. The Ice & Fire build is created for Trials, Dungeons & Maelstrom Arena.

Gear and Item Set Info
Before I say anything else, I don't have any DLC so this will focus on things you can get in the base game.
Index
- Race (Why Bosmer?)
- Armor
- Jewelry
- Weapons
- Mundus Stones
- Skills
- Rotation
- Food and Potions
- Passives
This build uses around 97 to 103 skill points.
1. Race: Why Bosmer?
Wood elves have innate Max Stamina and Stamina Recovery which make them great for an offensive stamina build. Plus I picked this race at the beginning without looking at the passives so I'm stuck with it and I would like to think I unwillingly know a thing or two about how stamina can be utilized.
2. Armor
Head & Shoulders: Kra'gh's or Velidreth (If you're lucky enough to get it from pledge coffers). Kra'gh's for solo play and Velidreth for group play.
Trait: 1 Reinforced (Head). 1 Divines (Shoulders).
Glyphs: 1 Max Health (Head). 1 Max Stamina (Shoulders).
- You can go full stamina, but I prefer to have at least 18k health and a little extra armor for PvE and Dungeons.
Chest, Hands, Legs, Feet, Waist: All Hunding's Rage
Trait: 1 Reinforced (Chest). 1 Divines (Hands, Legs, Feet, Waist).
Glyphs: 1 Max Health (Chest), 4 Max Stamina (Hands, Legs, Feet, Waist)
- For extra survivability, and because I don't usually run out of stamina with this build, I put the trait Reinforced on the Chest because it has the highest armor value. But again, you could go full stamina if you are in need of it.
Side note: If you REALLY want that extra bit of survivability, get the head & shoulders in heavy armor and get the Constitution and Juggernaut passives.
3. Jewelry
The Agility set for both rings and necklace.
Traits: Robust
Glyphs: Stamina Recovery
4. Weapons
Primary: Two Daggers of the Night Mother for that little extra bit of Weapon Critical.
Traits: Main Hand Sharpened. Off-Hand Precise.
Glyphs: Main Hand Poison. Off-Hand Oblivion.
Secondary: Bow of the Night Mother.
Traits: Charged.
Glyphs: Disease.
Poison: Damage Health Poison IX made with Fleshfly Larva, Nightshade, and Nirnroot. I can't tell you how to live your life, but I will mention it can get expensive because of the Nightshade, so I only use poison in Dungeons or on difficult bosses.
5. Mundus Stones
Warrior for damage. Thief for critical chance.
This one is a preference. I prefer Warrior for more consistent damage, but you can bump up your critical chance another 10-ish percent with the Thief and get up around 70% crit chance before potions.
General Info
6. Skills
I tried to place the skills in such a way that is easiest for me to reach when moving and needing to spam certain abilities. For example, your DPS on the last 25% of your enemies' health comes from Killer's Blade, which you spam quite a lot, so having it set on 1 in the skill bar is nice because it's not a skill you use for most of the fight and also don't need to move a whole lot so you don't need to press Shift or anything.
Primary Weapon (Up close and personal daggers)
- Killer's Blade is the Stamina morph and does +300% of your weapon damage on enemies with low health (25% or below) which is fantastic for finishing off bosses.
- Blood Craze does good damage and is better for solo play because of its survivability. If you have a dedicated healer or do more dungeons than open world play, go with Rending Slashes for the extra damage boost.
- Surprise Attack reduces enemy physical resistance, and physical is 99% of the damage you do with this build.
- Steel Tornado for its awesome range though the other morph is fine too I guess. This is interchangable with Flurry and its morphs if you want more single target damage.
- Relentless Focus a stamina morph that reduces damage taken and can heal you if you're up close to the enemy? Sounds good to me!
Ultimate: Soul Harvest make an enemy take more damage for a short time and is cheap so you can use it often.
Secondary Weapon (Ranged AoE DoT)
- Soul Splitting Trap is a decent AoE DoT and is the only Magicka ability you'll use with this build so you can recast it on trash mobs without worry. They usually die before the effect ends anyway.
- Arrow Barrage AoE DoT that has a bigger range than the other morph. As long as the target stays within range, it will do more damage and you won't have to recast as often.
- Razor Caltrops AoE DoT that only reduces enemy physical resistance if they are on the ground. Floating for flying enemies like Lich or Harpy aren't effected. Great for everything else though.
- Acid Spray another AoE DoT for trash mobs. Can be changed out with Poison Arrow morphs if you want to interrupt something at a distance (Venom Arrow) or do more damage to a low health enemy (Poison Injection).
- Leeching Strikes is honestly only on this bar because it couldn't fit in the first bar. Light and Heavy Attacks restore Health and Stamina, awesome.
Ultimate: Flawless Dawnbreaker because it increases weapon damage and the other morph doesn't. Also great for strong boss adds and absolutely destroying trash mobs.
7. Rotation
For groups of enemies:
- Use Relentless Focus, then Leeching Strikes to start.
- Use Arrow Barrage, then Razor Caltrops, Soul Splitting Trap, Acid Spray, then just spam Steel Tornado until your other ability durations end and you need to recast them.
Using Razor Caltrops first is probably the best idea since it lasts longer than Arrow Barrage, but in Dungeons I prefer the above method because by the time the arrows start raining, I'll have enough time before the enemies are alerted to cast the caltrops, meaning the arrows start falling right when the caltrops are cast.
For single target enemies:
- Make sure your butt is planted firmly behind the enemy at all times or the effect from Surprise Attack won't work.
- Use Relentless Focus, then Leeching Strikes to start.
- If you're still approaching the boss (don't forget to dodge roll to get in close and get 6 seconds of extra physical and spell penetration because of your Bosmer passive) and haven't gotten into melee range, cast some of the DoT abilities for extra initial damage.
- Use a Light Attack, Surprise Attack, Light Attack, Blood Craze, Light Attack, Surprise Attack, Heavy Attack, Relentless Focus, repeat. Recast Relentless Focus when necessary.
- Refresh your Leeching Strikes at the end of every 2 or 3 rotations so you don't run low on Stamina.
- Repeat until boss is below 25% health.
- When the boss is below 25% health, just spam Killer's Blade. No, seriously, just keep using it over and over. It does +300% damage and can be used quickly. Also maybe throw in Surprise Attack every now and then if the boss doesn't resist its effect.
Make sure to keep using Surprise Attack for that big juicy damage and weave in some Light and Heavy Attacks to regain Stamina and ultimate.
For those that switched out Steel Tornado or Acid Spray for Flurry or Poison Arrow morphs, just make sure to keep an eye out for low health enemies and which enemies are taking longer to kill so you can focus them down. Flurry can replace the second Surprise Attack in the single target rotation for some decent damage and Poison Arrow, like I mentioned before, can either interrupt an enemy or do more damage to low health enemies depending on the morph. Honestly I don't use Poison Arrow that much because anything that doesn't die from the AoE DoT abilities is usually a boss or mini-boss that can be focused down with the daggers, it's just nice to be able to interrupt an enemy or two that are far away and not among a group or do a good amount of DoT to one particular enemy.
As for ultimates, best to use them with potions, but especially on bosses or in sticky situations. Unfortunately I don't know the exact number of strikes and such it takes to build an ultimate, so it's your call to use them whenever you like. I tend to use Soul Harvest whenever it comes up when fighting a boss and I know I can wail on it without beind interrupted for a few seconds.
8. Food and Potions
Dubious Camoran Throne is your friend.
Essence of Weapon Power potion made with Blessed Thistle, Dragonthorn, Hyactinh/Wormwood for weapon power, weapon critical, and stamina recovery. Can get expensive so try to save for boss fights only. Best used with your ultimates for boosted damage.
9. Passives
Get ALL the passives for the following skill lines:
- Shadow, Siphoning, Dual Wield, Bow, Medium Armor, Undaunted, and Racial.
As for the rest:
- Assassin - Everything except Master Assassin since this build doesn't use stealth.
- Soul Magic - Soul Shatter is optional. Just nice to have in case you get to low health.
- Fighter's Guild - Everything except Bounty Hunter.
- Heavy Armor - Like I mentioned earlier, if you want a little more defense at the cost of some offense, get two heavy armor and grab the Constitution and Juggernaut passives.
Extra info?
I'm not the best when it comes to weaving, but I can get around 15k dps and up to 19k with potions with this build according to the add-ons I use. It's certainly not the best, but for base game and no DLC, it works well for me and whatever I'm doing at the time. I hope it works well for you too!

Objective
The purpose of this build will be to offer Warden players interested in the tanking role, a way to level up through the early game. While we’ll be focusing on grabbing important skills that assist us in becoming harder to kill, or proving support to our allies; we’ll also be nabbing some damage production skills to help speed up the leveling process.
Should you play this build?
Warden tanking is a truly powerful playstyle in the Elder Scrolls Online. It takes away a lot of great ideas from things like Max Health scaling abilities from the Templar Tank, as well as the hardy defensive roles from the Dragonknight. While we won’t be replacing a Dragonknight tank in terms of overall power, we fit perfectly into groups that require multiple tanks (such as trials) or in Cyrodiil. If you’re looking for a tank that can do more than just hold block and look pretty, the Warden tank is for you.
Priority Skills (Bar Progression coming soon)
Leveling as a tank has a lot of stuff left to choice. You might want to level as a damage dealer to have a speedy experience, or you might want to level as a full tank so you can experience the Looking for Group and begin experimenting with how tanking in ESO works. We’ll be mixing a bit of the two with this leveling guide; focusing on nabbing the most important skills as a tank, while also getting some damage if you want to grind.
One-hand and Shield
One-hand and Shield, or “Sword and Board” (SnB for short), will serve as our primary tool as a tank. It will enable raw defensive power in form of mitigation, as well as a lot of great utility like reducing cost of blocking and other important stats. The skills here will also play into what we’re trying to do on the battlefield; control our enemies by forcing their focus on us, and afflicting them with debuffs to empower our allies against them.
- Puncture (Taunt | morph to Pierce Armor) – Our bread and butter as a tank, forcing an enemy to focus us for the next 15 seconds. It’ll also deal some moderate damage while leveling, and is smooth and easy to use. Treat this as a spammable if you’re in solo play. We take Pierce Armor to ensure enemies are also taking additional damage, as it reduces their Armor by 5280 for 12 seconds, making them 10.56% less resistant to damage. Wonderful!
- Defensive Posture (Self buff | morph to Absorb Magic) – A truly underutilized skill for tanks, despite it being amazing. Passively slotting this skill will grant us 4% damage reduction while blocking, as well as 8% cost reduction while blocking. Once this skill is morphed, if we activate this skill, the next Spell based projectile casted at us will instead heal us for an insane amount. This skill alone can let you live through an intense boss fight or trash pull; so watch your surroundings!
Second Bar (Preference weapon)
As a tank we’re free to chose our back bar while leveling. In the current end game, most tanks will double bar a Sword and Shield, to make sure they’re as tanky as possible. While leveling you aren’t bound to this restriction, so you can chose from anything. If you like a more offensive Stamina based approach, try Bow or Two Handed. If you prefer a more defensive Magicka approach, try Restoration Staff. Finally, if you’re looking for something REALLY different, try a Frost Destruction staff. I’ve personally found Frost Destruction staff the most fun, but I definitely wouldn’t take it into level capped content.
Animal Companion
- Scorch (Delayed burst | morph to preference) – While we are a tank, this skill is one of the most iconic Warden skills for damage production. We won’t be using it end game, but it’s fun to use and super helpful while leveling. Take the morph that best fits your build (Subterranean if you’re focusing on Stamina and Weapon Damage, or Deep Fissure if you’re focusing on Magicka and Spell Damage).
- Betty Netch (Buff | morph to Bull Netch) – As a tank, our Stamina is the most precious resource we have. We need it to taunt, block, and bash enemies; making it extremely important. Bull Netch will offer us some much needed Stamina over 25 seconds, and it costs nothing to use.
Green Balance
- Living Vines (Heal over time | morph to Leeching Vines) – Since we’re going to be focusing on the tank role, taking damage is something we’re going to be doing a lot. Living Vines is a truly unique skill that works ONLY when you’re actively taking damage. Every time you get hit, you heal, making this skill a no brainer as a tank. It’ll also apply Minor Lifesteal to the attackers, so it can help you AND your group heal!
- Lotus Flower (Buff and Heal | morph to preference) – While we will be tanking, this skill helps the Warden heal themself wonderfully while leveling up. Proccing off Light or Fully Charged Heavy attacks, this will also give us either 10% Weapon or Spell Critical Strike Chance based on what morph we take. You’ll usually want to take Blossom for the Spell Crit, but the choice depends on what you’re focusing on.
Winter’s Embrace
- Frost Cloak (Group buff | morph to preference) – The first form of group wide Major Ward and Resolve, this skill grants you and the 5 closest allies 8% damage reduction against all attacks. Morph options will make the range larger and cost less, or additional self preservation in form of Minor Protection. Take what you feel best fits your experiences in game (group play vs solo)
- Arctic Wind (Self heal | morph to Arctic Blast) – This skill serves as a nice little self heal, granting 10% of our Max Health instantly, and then 2% Max Health every 2 seconds over 5 seconds; for a total of 20% of our Max Health over 20 seconds. It can crit, but it will only use Spell Critical; so this is better for more Magicka based tanks. Arctic Blast will also add some additional damage performance, scaling off our Max Health, making it great for tanks and leveling!
- Impaling Shards (Damage over time | morph to preference) – More damage is always good, and this skill will scale with our Max health (base morph and Gripping Shards morph), letting it synergize extremely well with our function as a tank. If you prefer to focus on more damage while leveling up, try the Winter’s Revenge morph. Simply place this skill at your feet and snare your enemies and deal frost damage every second for 12 seconds!
Priority Passives
One-hand and Shield
- Fortress – This passive simply reduces the cost of our SnB abilities, AND takes a massive chunk of Stamina consumption off of blocking attacks. Very helpful for sustaining our precious Stamina.
- Sword and Board – Tankiness and damage come both from this passive, granting us additional block mitigation, as well as increasing our Weapon Damage.
Animal Companion
- Savage Beast – Ultimates are a very important aspect of the game, and this passive helps the Warden generate ultimate quickly when using Animal Companion skills.
- Flourish – Resource management is a vital key to allowing a player to remain relevant and versatile in combat. This passive helps increase our Stamina and Magicka regeneration by a whopping 12% simply for slotting at least one Animal Companion skill.
Green Balance
- Accelerated Growth – Healing yourself or an ally at low Health (under 40%) will proc Major Mending for a short duration, helping your heals be even more powerful. This makes us hard to kill, even at low Health.
- Maturation – Any time we heal ourself with a Green Balance skill, we gain Minor Toughness, giving us a 10% boost to Maximum Health. This passive lets us take even more punishment and stay in the fight.
Winter’s Embrace
- Glacial Presence – The Chilled status effect has a chance to proc off of any Frost damage, which we’ll be using a lot of. This passive helps increase the chance our Winter’s Embrace abilities have to proc this status effect, meaning we’ll have a higher up-time on Minor Maim; which makes our enemies deal 15% less damage.
- Piercing Cold – While this passive is more damage focused, increasing our kill potential while leveling makes the experience much less grueling. Plus even as a tank, if the boss dies faster, your job is done sooner!
Heavy Armor
- Constitution – One of the best passives in the game for resource management, helping both your Magicka and Stamina come back when you get hit. While it has been nerfed a lot recently, it is still boasts insane potential.
- Wrath – Another passive that helps us deal damage, both while leveling and at end game. Getting hit merely boosts both our Spell and Weapon Damage, making this passive great for whatever your play style is.
- Rapid Mending – Resource management is hard, and while dropping block can be deadly in early game encounters against massive bosses, Heavy Attacking is a great way to get some Stamina or Magicka back. This passive helps increase the amount of resources we get back, so we can keep block up much more.
Gear Suggestions
Find yourself a friend as soon as possible so you can get your hands on great gear. Crafted sets are by far the strongest way to level up in ESO, so hold onto that quest money to pay the bills, or start learning crafting yourself!
The focus with this is to enable survival and a little bit of resource management. Whitestrake’s proc has an extremely low cooldown, meaning it can proc quite frequently. The damage shield it provides is pretty helpful when tanking, and with a healer around you’ll be almost unstoppable. Leveling as a tank makes gear choices pretty up to the user though, as you can get away with a lot of stuff.
Tips and Miscellaneous
- Race is a very important choice in ESO if you plan on making your character as powerful as possible. Almost all of the content in the game can be done by anything, but if you plan on playing in level capped dungeons or harder versions like Veteran, you’ll want to research what race fits best for you. Tanks luckily have more freedom than any other class, since tanking is less about numbers and more about understanding mechanics. For this build in particular (Tank Wardens), here are the best choices;
- Argonians are overall the best tank race in the game. Between their raw Health and Healing amplifications and unparalleled resource management of Magicka and Stamina, it’s hard to pick anything else.
- Imperials offer a massive boost to Stamina and Health, which are vital to any tank. Their West Star passive also adds a tiny bit of self healing.
- Orcs are a very versatile race that bring Stamina, Health, Healing amplifications, and even damage. They’re perfect if you plan on PvPing a lot or want to switch between Stamina DPS and tank.
- To discover skill lines you’ll need to equip their respective pieces of gear or interact. Interacting with a Anvil will unlock Blacksmithing, while getting a kill with a Two Hander will unlock the Two Handed Skill line. Equipping at least 3 pieces of an armor weight (Light, Medium, or Heavy) will unlock that skill line. Try unlocking all skill lines as soon as possible so you can get an idea of what you want to do with your character.
- Consumables are a very important aspect of ESO, there is ZERO reason to not have a Food or Drink buff, or to drink potions in combat. They’ll help raise your stats and combat effectiveness, so try and find Food, Drinks, and Potions within your level range as you play. You can always craft, or find a friend to craft you some!
- Weaving is an obscure and often misunderstood mechanic in Elder Scrolls Online. Start by looking up guides or talking with players about what this phenomena is, and practice early. Understanding the game’s combat system will ensure you will have fun AND remain efficient while playing. Be wary though, due to the complexity of this mechanic, many players often share misinformation about it. Always try to get as many opinions and sources as possible to ensure you have a more well rounded view.
- Although we are tanks, and weaving isn’t something we have to worry about too much since we’ll be blocking; it’s always good to make yourself familiar with the game’s combat mechanics so you can understand different perspectives and how to utilize the tools at your disposal.
- Mundus Stones are a unique mechanic to ESO that offer your character a free boon for having active. Simply interact with a Stone to gain a permanent effect. You may interact with a Mundus Stone whenever you want, and replace whatever stone you interacted with before, with a new one.
- As a Warden Tank you’ll likely want to take the Atronach to help Magicka sustain to cast abilities.
- Attribute Points are another way to increase your character’s power as you level up. There is no real “best” way to spend these, but usually you’ll want to focus on your character build’s main stat; either Magicka or Stamina. Health points are also important so you don’t die, so if you find yourself dying too quickly in combat, you can bolster that up as well.
- As a Tank Warden you have a lot of freedom with Attribute Point allocation. There is no answer to this, but instead try on focusing hitting set baselines when you’re level capped. 30k or more Health, 18k or more Stamina, and 18k or more Magicka is what you want to hit as a baseline with all your gear and Food or Drink buffs.
Champion Point Progression
Mage (Blue Tree)
This tree isn’t super vital to us as a tank, since we’re all about soaking damage instead of dealing it. I usually suggest working on pumping up Blessed, and then either Elfborn or Precise Strikes to buff your healing. You’re free to do whatever though!
Warrior (Red Tree)
A healthy split between Hardy and Elemental Expert until 40 will help reduce damage greatly and improve survivability. After that begin pumping up Iron Clad and Thick Skinned with a 3:1 ratio (3 Iron Clad, 1 Thick Skinned). Check the End Game’s tab to see the final version.
Thief (Green Tree)
Eso Warden Build
Arcanist and Shadow Ward are your best friends as a tank. Work on Shadow Ward first, and once it started hitting diminishing returns start spending elsewhere.
Other Priorities
- Passives are important in ESO. If you use a class line, weapon type, or armor weight; always get ALL the passives when you have extra skill points.
- Join Guilds early to level them up as you go, instead of having to do it once you’re at cap. Fighter’s Guild, Mage’s Guild, and Undaunted are the most important, while Thieves Guild and The Dark Brotherhood offer more questing/RP approaches. Many powerful skills lie within the main 3 guilds, so always toy around with them.
- As a Tank Warden, Undaunted is the most important. Fighter’s Guild and Mage’s Guild both have some usable skills, but can be considered optional.
[Updated 5/24/17, missing visuals]
Objective
Now that you’re level capped, it’s time to step up to the challenge of doing end game content as a tank. Dungeons and trials will be our primary focus, but you can easily swap some skills around and enter Cyrodiil too. Don’t expect to be able to solo much content with this build, since we won’t be dealing much damage. Instead we’ll be insanely hard to kill, and cover a breadth of options to try and give every player an option.
Skills
*There currently aren’t any visual indicators for the Warden skills on the site used to display, so please remain patient until they are added! Apologies for any inconvenience this causes.*
Sword and Board | Main bar
- Pierce Armor (morph of Puncture | One-hand and Shield skill line) – Our bread and butter as a tank. Use this to force an enemy to attack you for 15 seconds. It will also make enemies have 10.56% less damage mitigation for 12 seconds, so you’ll want to cast it every 11-12 seconds instead.
- Arctic Blast (morph of Arctic Wind | Winter’s Embrace skill line) – A solid heal that instantly restores 10% of our Max Health, and another 10% over 10 seconds. This can also crit and will scale with % healing, meaning it can heal way more than just 20% of our Health. It’ll also deal some decent Frost damage to enemies in an AoE, having a chance to apply Minor Maim.
- Gripping Shards (morph of Impaling Shards | Winter’s Embrace skill line) – A wonderful source of damage for the Warden tank, with tons of added utility. Since it’s Frost damage it can apply Minor Maim, and it will also immobilize up to 6 enemies for 3 seconds upon cast, helping control them instead of running around.
- Absorb Magic (morph of Defensive Posture| One-hand and Shield skill line) – Acting more as a passive slot than anything, this skill also has some incredibly potent niche power. Granting us 4% mitigation and 8% block cost reduction, it can also be activated to absorb the next Spell Projectile casted at us, instead healing us for massive amounts. Use this when you fight enemy mages, or if a boss throws a magical ranged attack at you.
- Shimmering Shield (morph of Crystallized Shield | Winter’s Embrace skill line) – This ability works similarly to Absorb Magic, but instead of healing us when we eat up a nasty projectile, we restore some Magicka. Furthermore it can eat up to three projectiles (either spell or weapon types too). Successfully eating a ranged attack will award Major Heroism, allowing disgusting amounts of Ultimate to be generated.
- Echoing Vigor (morph of Vigor | Alliance War Assault skill line) – More healing as a tank is always great, and this lets us heal our allies (up to 6) in a pretty large area. It is costly, so don’t spam it!
- Looking for more utility? Try Stalwart Guard (morph of Guard | Alliance War Support skill line) – This ability allows you to soak 30% of the damage that your ally takes, helping them stay alive through punishment. The 30% they take will first go through their mitigation (lowering the damage) and then going through YOUR own mitigation (further lowering it), so there is little disadvantage to this skill. It also buffs you and your ally with Minor Force, granting 10% Critical Strike Modifier to help their DPS skyrocket.
- Ultimate Option 1 (Self Sustain) Shield Discipline (morph of Shield Wall | One-hand and Shield skill line) – This ultimate takes all of the Stamina consumption from Blocking and disables it for the duration. It also allows Sword and Shield abilities to be casted for FREE during the time, helping your Stamina bar replenish.
- Ultimate Option 2 (Passive and “Oh Sh*t button”) Replenishing or Reviving Barrier (morph of Barrier | Alliance War Support skill line) – Both of these skills are truly phenomenal. Passively slotting it grants 10% Magicka Regeneration, which helps a lot. You can also activate it to give up to 6 allies a massive damage shield. Replenishing awards Magicka and Ultimate back when the shield breaks (per ally), while Reviving adds a massive Heal over time to the shield (it will stay if it breaks!).
Sword and Board | Utility and Buffs
- Inner Rage (morph of Inner Fire | Undaunted skill line) – The only form of an instant cast Ranged taunt in the game, this thing packs a punch with utility. Much like Pierce Armor it will force an enemy to attack you for 15 seconds. However upon cast there will be a % chance to proc a special Synergy called Radiate, which deals a metric f*ck ton of damage. Inner Rage increases this chance, and will cost Magicka, rather than Stamina; ensuring we can taunt an enemy with any resource we want!
- Frost Cloak (morph to preference | Winter’s Embrace skill line) – A truly wonderful skill that grants you and 5 nearby allies Major Ward and Resolving, granting 8% damage reduction for quite a while. The morph preference depends on what you want. More range and reduced cost sound fancy? Go with Expansive Frost Cloak. Taking less damage for yourself only sound a bit more enticing? Take Ice Fortress then! Both are great.
- Leeching Vines (morph of Living Vines | Green Balance skill line) – As a tank we’re going to be constantly taking damage, and this skill makes that a GOOD thing. Applicable to 1 person (preferably ourself), anytime they take damage they’ll heal (up to once per second). Anything that hits you during the duration will also have Minor Lifesteal applied to it, allowing you and your allies to heal when attacking it.
- Already have plenty of healing? Try using Spiked Bone Shield (morph of Bone Shield | Undaunted skill line) – Granting a damage shield for 30% of your Max Health, and dealing damage to any melee attacks for a portion of the damage they deal. It will also allow allies to smash a synergy to give up to 6 people a shield for a massive 60% of their Maximum Health. Super helpful!
- Circle of Protection (morph to preference | Fighter’s Guild skill line) – A great form of AoE Minor Protection, allowing people to take 8% less damage. This will affect up to 6 allies, making it very helpful in high damage situations. The cost is extremely punishing though, so be wary.
- Spell Symmetry (morph of Equilibrium | Mage’s Guild skill line) – Resource management is hard in Morrowind, and this skill helps the Magicka portion of the sustain become a thing of the past. Upon cast you’ll drain 20% of your Max Health, but gain 12% of your Max Health as Magicka. You won’t be able to heal yourself for 4 seconds after casting, but allies can still heal you! Successful casts will also reduce the next cost of a Magicka ability by 25% in the next 5 seconds.
- If losing Health sounds scary to you and your Magicka management is fine, try using this as a Flex spot. There are tons of amazing utility skills that help either you or your allies! Experiment early and find what you like.
- Bull Netch (morph of Betty Netch | Animal Companion skill line) – The Bull Netch attempts to help the Warden retain a little bit of resource management, giving the Warden roughly 4500 Stamina over a 25 second duration. While active, the Netch will also enable Major Brutality, giving us 20% bonus Weapon Damage. The cast time is rather long winded, but can be block or bar swap canceled to speed up the process. It has no cost to boot, so don’t worry about over casting this. Try and always make sure this is up!
- Ultimate Option 1 (Surviability) Permafrost (morph of Sleet Storm | Winter’s Embrace skill line) – This ultimate will help our group stay alive through harsh punishment. During the duration it offers you and 5 nearest allies Major Protection, reducing all damage taken by 30%. It also will stun minor enemies if they are hit 3 times by the skill, and can stun up to 6 targets at a time (it will deal damage up to 60 targets). Very helpful, and it looks and sounds awesome.
- Ultimate Option 2 (Meta) Aggressive Warhorn (morph of Warhorn | Alliance War Assault skill line) – Tried and true, Aggressive Horn remains one of the best support ultimates in the game. Having no allied target cap, it grants 10% bonus Health, Magicka, and Stamina for 30 seconds. Furthermore, for the first 9.5 seconds of the cast, it grants Major Force to make Critical Strikes 15% stronger. This ultimate might not boast up front damage numbers in your face, but your allies and yourself will begin doing insanely high damage for the duration, making it the strongest damage performing ultimate in the game.
Gear
In this section you will find a multitude of options, trying to give every player an idea of what gear to go after. Always try to experiment and find what works best for you, as there is no real universal “best”. I’ve gone to extra lengths to try and offer a lot of different options this time around for tanks.
Beginner/Crafted+BoE
- Hist Bark (4 trait craftable) – A decent set that grants us Major Evasion while holding block, offering 15% chance to Dodge an attack. It has no cooldown upon successful Dodge, so you can reduce a lot of incoming heat with this.
- Plague Doctor (Deshaan overland events) – In the day and age of Max Health stacking, Plague Doctor does this best. Super easy to get a hold of, the set grants absurd amounts of Health, helping our abilities as a Warden scale even better!
- Seducer (3 trait craftable) – Since we have 2 slots open with this set I suggest getting a bit of Magicka Regeneration. Seducers does the job nicely, but honestly any 2 piece set can go here.
Health Stacking Madman/woman
- Plague Doctor (Deshaan overland events) – In the day and age of Max Health stacking, Plague Doctor does this best. Super easy to get a hold of, the set grants absurd amounts of Health, helping our abilities as a Warden scale even better!
- Green Pact (Grahtwood overland events) – As if Plague Doctor wasn’t enough, here comes Green Pact with even MORE Health. Simply having a food buff active will grant you 4000 more Health (subjective to amplifications!) and Health recovery. Hope you’re ready to never die.
- Any Monster set (Undaunted chests & any dungeon) helps fill in each slot, whether it be two 1 pieces, or one 2 piece set. If you’re insane and want even more Health, try mixing something like Valkyn and Mephala. There are tons of options here though, and many good choices depending on what you’re trying to do.
Ultimate Factory
- Blood Spawn (Undaunted Chests and Spindleclutch II) – A decent 2 piece set that has a chance to gain some Armor (Spell and Physical Resistance) for 6 seconds (9.77% damage mitigation at gold c160). It also gifts us with 15 Ultimate when it procs, with a 6 second cooldown.
- Tava’s Blessing (5 trait craftable) – This set has Ultimate generation written all over it. Anytime you Dodge (Major and Minor Evasion, and Dodge rolling) you gain 3 Ultimate every second, for 3 seconds. It has no cooldown, but does require you to sacrifice bar slots to run Major and or Minor Evasion.
- If using Evasion skills doesn’t sound up your alley, you can always use Werewolf Hide (Glenumbra overland events) or Shalk Exoskeleton (Stonefalls overland events). They don’t generate as much Ultimate as Tava’s, but don’t have requirements.
- Akaviri Dragonguard (Eastmarch overland events) – This set has a ton of helpful set bonuses, and reduces the cost of our Ultimates by 15%. If you’re using high cost Ultimates like Aggressive Warhorn, this will help throw those babies out.
Sustain God
- Engine Guardian (Undaunted Chests and Darkshade Caverns II) – The classic running joke that Deltia will never live down, I had to make sure a few of his builds have this set. It still does its job wonderfully, by providing either Health, Magicka, or Stamina with a relatively high up time. Just don’t be surprised if someone laughs at you or makes a Star Wars reference when you get the resource you don’t want (That wasn’t the droid you were looking for…)
- Black Rose (Imperial City Sewers Vendor) – Now available in any slot any trait, AND with Gold Jewelry; Black Rose is strong and versatile. It can get pretty pricey, but it will help buffer up your Constitution proc, giving even more Magicka and Stamina back when you get hit.
- Bloodthorn’s Touch (Glenumbra overland events) – A hidden gem that the community never picked up on, despite it being insanely powerful. It drops in Light armor or Arcane jewelry, so it’s great for the more Magicka oriented tank. Operating similarly to Constitution, you’ll get 660 Magicka and Stamina back when hit, with a 5 second cooldown.
Consumables, Race, and Mundus
Warden Dungeon Running Eso Dmg 2
Food: Tri Stat Food (Health, Magicka, and Stamina) covers all bases of our resource pools, helping tremendously. If you prefer more sustain however, try Witchmother’s Brew (a holiday event recipe) or Orzorga’s Red Frothgar (Orsinium quest recipe).
Potions: Potions as a tank are highly dependent on what you like. Most people prefer Tri potions (Columbine, Mountain Flower, and Bugloss) to help restore all resources. Major Vitality potions (Butterfly Wing, Beetle Scuttle, and Water Hyacinth or Scrib Jelly) also can help tremendously, although Major Vitality only lasts 15.7s out of the 45s cooldown.
Race: Argonians are overall the best tank race in the game. Between their raw Health and Healing amplifications and unparalleled resource management of Magicka and Stamina, it’s hard to pick anything else.
Imperials offer a massive boost to Stamina and Health, which are vital to any tank. Their West Star passive also adds a tiny bit of self healing.

Orcs are a very versatile race that bring Stamina, Health, Healing amplifications, and even damage. They’re perfect if you plan on PvPing a lot or want to switch between Stamina DPS and tank.
Any race works as a tank, since they’re more about understanding mechanics than balancing numbers.
Mundus: Most tanks will find the Atronach Mundus to be most beneficial. Magicka Regeneration helps cast more utility spells and ensure you won’t run dry. You’re free to tinker with other options like the Ritual for more healing capabilities, or something completely different.
